My journey in poetry writing began somewhat in steps (or cycles) with Love Poems which eventually evolved to Passage, Exaltation and finally to Devotional & Ecstasy poems (although not necessarily sequentially). Recently, I learned about the life story of Hafiz, a Sufi poet: who one day saw a Girl that was so beautiful that he altered and his whole life to writing poetry to (or about) her. Finally one day, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him—his contact with the Divine was so extraordinary that he realized all along—his love poems were to the Divine. After that, he forgot all about the Girl…and wrote only to the One. I was amused by this story because in 2005, I had an experience like Hafiz.
I was walking down the street on Amsterdam Avenue in New York City and a beautiful girl (who looked like an Angel descending from heaven)—looked at me with the deepest aura of compassion.
She seemed to have seen me from far away—so the split second that we past—her focus was prepared to cut right through me. Since, then I coined her the “Girl with the Thousand Eyes” and realized that “Shaktipat” (a word I didn’t know of at the time) had entered me. Traditionally, Shaktipat refers to a spiritual initiation—but its literal meaning is “Descent of Grace.” Since that experience, I realized that I was projecting my love of the Divine through this experience of the Girl “with the thousand eyes” (not only then–but throughout my life since childhood). That very night, my lover of five years broke up with me—and the pain was so immense. I knew that the Girl (or Angel) appeared as a Comforter to show me that Greater Love extends beyond the human capacity. It has taken me a few more years to develop and mature spiritually. Finally, in mid-March 2008—the Kundalini fully awakened in me…and that was when I began to write directly to the One. — Ji, Denver, CO/ April 2008 — Poetry Table of Contents
