EXPERIMENTAL SHORT: “So This is Good-Bye,” 2007
SO THIS IS GOODBYE, 2007
Meditations - Experimental - Abstract - Music - Short

Much of today’s media is computer generated and polished with special effects which makes life look much more “glamorous” than it really is. Although I appreciate the luxuries of commercial Technology to produce Pristine imagery, I nevertheless am aware that it desensitizes the Eye and makes it harder for people to feel the Visuals that are naturally produced in life. With this video, I wanted to retrain the Eye.
The Sound composition in this video is a Loop sampled from a Dead Can Dance track. I warped the pitch in the music to create an organic “Hurdy Gurdy” instrumental groan; I wanted the music to sound like a “voice” (or to behave like one). The length of this piece (and each Loop) is determined by a set meter “blocks” or “units” of beats that I felt was necessary to keep the mood even. Some viewers might think this is a “music video” but is not. If the music appears “seamless” (like a finished composition)–it is hopefully because my 48 hours of sound editing paid off :-]
This Short may or may not convey much of what I’ve discussed. However, I think it is important for viewers to understand the Intention. I don’t believe Art is supposed to reveal the Intention (Blue Print of an Idea) anyway: that would be like listening a song and feeling a need to look at the Score. They need to be treated separately.

Synopsis:
Ever since I moved to New York in 1990–I’ve somehow over the years became Obsessed with Traffic. I like looking at traffic congestion from a Bird’s Eye POV. This does not mean I like to watch stale traffic reports from helicopters seen on the news or that I enjoy being Inside a traffic jam.
But I like looking at it–as an Art Piece; a Chaos of Movement with its weird Prozac-Conscious sense of Order; colliding in nearness, never touching… seemingly Despondent or lost…but always heading in a narrow direction with great Urgency nevertheless.
I think that my Obsession with Traffic has to do with the image of Migration, of a “River Crossing” (a dramatic spiritual transition that we go through in life) so to speak–of a longing and desolate Comfort found in people going places; looking for home… or trying to Escape one.
There is Great Mystery to things in Motion. This Short was shot in 1/2 a day and Edited and Completed in 3 days–albeit not sleeping 2:3 of those days *smile*
